Well Hey There Little Feller!

Shortly after 8 a.m. this morning we found this inquisitive little mephitid doing what mephitids are known to do during the spring: seeking a reliable source of earthworms and insects. As Shadow whined from the kitchen floor and Jiggy moaned and scratched to be let out the back door (none of the other cats feigned interest), Susan and I watched amazed from the breakfast nook window as this brazen striped skunk dug through the foliage surrounding the base of the palm tree entirely unaware of our presence until I bumped against a chair and Shadow skittered out of the way. That’s when it assumed the frozen position you see below for several moments before making its escape away to the neighbor’s yard:

At least its business end was pointed in the other direction.
