Norm, You Almost Lost Me
There’s a reason I don’t usually read overly long introductions to books — especially nonfictionals — I’m about to embark on and Norman M. Klein in his preface to his “The History of Forgetting” definitely had me rolling my eyes almost had me saying “Forget about it!” at several points, such as this one:
“In the [...]

Next!
I’d heard about it, but it just registered today that Michael Crichton has a new book out titled “Next.” My first impulse was “yipee!” because I’ve a long history of reading the readable writer: “Andromeda Strain,” “Terminal Man,” “Jurassic Park,” “Lost World,” “Westworld,” “Congo,” “Airframe,” “Timeline,” even the rather tedious “Rising Sun.” All were easily [...]

The Jig Gets High
Here’s a floor-level view of our youngest cat, almost 3-year-old Jiggy, who can regularly be found at the highest level of these floor-to-ceiling shelves built in to the wall between the dining and living rooms:
I’m not sure the appeal of such a summit (about nine feet high) but he certainly has no trouble getting up [...]

Better Now
Rode safe.
Rode true.
To the uppers of Elysian Park.
To the heights of Griffith Park, too.
Quite the points of view.
And the whybirds flew away about halfway through.
But before I bid adieu.
Here’s a photoset for you.
P.S. Ranger says hey what’s new.

When The Tough Gets Going…
I may be putting too much stock in how proudly and positively I deal with the stresses and disses and setbacks that afflict me. I’m not an alcoholic. I’m not an abuser or a destructor. Sure there’s some self-pity I wade through but I recognize it and strive to keep the levels down and [...]

Morning Moon
It wasn’t to long ago that on a Tuesday morning at 6:08 a.m. I’d be out with some of my fellow cyclist buds rotating around the Silver Lake reservoir. Of late if I’m up at this time (which is pretty common any day of the week) I’d be gearing into the morning routine: putting the [...]

What’s In A Name?
Here’s a surname I’m pretty sure doesn’t get sounded out every day: Engensperger. Specifically Mr. P. Engensperger.
Who dat? Good question. Don’t know. But it’s the name on the latest trinket found in the never-ending treasure trove of our backyard. While out cavorting with Ranger (who overnight has taken to fetching the frisbee like she’s been [...]

New Fave Route… No Doubt
Following up on my post about Saturday’s awesome bike ridings, I went into Gmaps and charted the course of the loop around Dodger Stadium through Elysian Park. Turns out to be about a 10.2-mile course, like so:
Also viewable here: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=573201.
I had a job interview this morning that despite my self-critical nature went pretty well as [...]

Happiness Is…
Susan got word from her mom that her grandma and uncle Jim up in Troy, Montana (where we enjoyed July 4 in 100-degree heat) are currently dealing with 14 inches of snow that a storm dropped on them.
Meanwhile back in L.A. today it was 80 degrees and gorgeous — especially so because I got on [...]
