Susan and I are back from our trip to Orange County where we had lunch at the dim sum palace known as Sea Food Paradise in Westminster, at the entrance of which I found this concrete truth:

And inside I had plenty of this:
I had incorrectly called the above “butter encrusted shrimp” in the post below. It’s actually mayonnaise encrusted shrimp and if I ever find it closer to home I’ll be most ecstatic, but until then I won’t be waiting years to go back to Westminster’s Little Saigon and getting me some more.
Afterwards we journeyed furthur south to Newport Beach’s Fashion Island, site of the Newport Beach Film Festival where we saw my friend Billy Savage and watched the screening of Klunkerz, his excellent documentary on the origins of mountain biking and the gawds who created it.
Here he is beforehand (center), talking with a bunch of the sport’s and film’s enthusiasts:
Way to go Mr. Savage. Now maybe one of these days you’ll be able to get back on your mountain bike instead of just talking about them!

very near that restaurant there used to be a store CAL stores, which was like a Zodys or Woolworths, in the 70s, early 80s. (if there is anyone who will remember CAL stores, it will be you Will) after the J. Geils Band made the cover of Rolling Stone in 1981, i drove my moms yellow volvo over and bought a pair of red converse allstars there just like the bass player on the cover. Also once saw a cool double feature of The Legend of Boggy Creek and `Thw Wildnerness Family’ with my sister at the nearby (now looooong flattened Westminster Twin theater. Remember those commercials? `NowplayinginKernInyoandStanislaus counties.ComingsoonforjusttwoweekstoLosangelesOrangeandRiversidecounties”

Excellent Timothy! I’ll pass along the info to her. And I’m sad to day while I remember Zody’s, I never had the acquaintance of CAL stores. I do however mourn the disappearance of the J. Geils Band. Their “Freezeframe” album is one of my favorites of all time.
P.S. Grindhouse it is.

Doug, you just liked Freezeframe because we all used to pick each other up in our cars and have the tape started but not playing until the unlucky victim sat down in his or her seat when all of a sudden the Blaupunkt 2000 stereo with accompanying speakers would scream out the first words of the song at full blast “FREEZEFRAME!” and the poor victim would damn near jump through the roof.

OMG. That food looks sooo good!
April 24th, 2007 at 8:25 am
looks really good…easy access from the 405 and Huntington Beach?
April 24th, 2007 at 9:24 am
Fraz, absolutely! Off the 405 at Beach heading north to Westminster Blvd, then right to 8602.
For $40 we had two servings of the shrimp, two beers a platter of steamed greens and three other various dim sums… including barbecued chicken feet, which I was adventurous to try (but probably won’t again — not because they were bad, just because they were chicken feet). Susan just sampled the sauce.

Check out Sam Woo on Broadway in Chinatown - I’m pretty sure that they serve that dish, only there it’s called something like Honey Walnut Shrimp. Shouldn’t be too hard to find at most places that serve Hong Kong-style food.

If you like Klunkerz, you will definitely like my website.

Mr. K. I not only liked Klunkerz and your website, but I think you were very much a large part of the heart and soul of Billy’s film. Thanks for stopping by!
