sic • \’sik\ adverb [Latin] (circa 1859): intentionally so written — used after a printed word or passage to indicate that it is exactly as printed or to indicate that it exactly reproduces an original (Ex. Tom said he seed [sic] it all).

Biking in L.A. certainly has it's moments of suck, but I too find it annoying how negative the media makes out riding in LA. Based on the views of some articles and the attached comments one might think we were in open combat, with cars mowing down people and cyclists smashing cars in U-Lock mobs on a daily basis.

You know the writer is clueless with the sub-title: Cyclists, Banned on Freeways. DOH!

Thank you for busting the Los Angelenos "cycling is dangerous" myth, too bad the writer did not read your earlier post "On Average Not The Best Week For Me On The Roads ..." This meme is a powerful negative frame "planners" or "bicycle advocates" use to rationalize those wonderful safe comfortable "bike lanes". I wonder how long a planner riding daily in a door zone bike lane with a lot of traffic get over their preconceptions of safety? Education, enforcement, work place encouragement and more "do no harm" engineering would go a lot further than more paint.

For your viewing enjoyment, how to ride confidently, legally and safely: Cyclist's Eye View: Driving Your Bicycle in Traffic.

Required viewing for Urban cyclists, and highly recommended for for City Staff, Planners, and Public Safety (Police) and Public Works. Youtube comment: Excellent. Every cyclist should learn from this series of video!

I know I only bike once or twice a week to work, but it's been a year so I think I have some perspective on the issue.

My "incidents" are few and far between and are probably similar to incidences of people cutting me off in my car. I haven't been run off the road, I haven't had anyone honk at me or say crude things. I have encountered my share of rude vehicles who think that the bike lane, or the curb lane is a good place to park, but I keep my head up and plan for this sort of crap.

My injuries are self inflicted at this point. A few bruises from smacking the handlebars into my belly or barking my shins on the wheels. (And I've had similar incidents with my car, I might add.)
