I've "rescued" many dogs and keep food and a leash too--just in case. It's even the kind of leash that just slips over in case there is no collar. Many have been right in my neighborhood. Years ago, I had a chocolate lab twice that spend some time on my porch. Another time, I found an elderly dog that spent and evening in my back yard. Having 3 of my own dogs, including one that doesn't get on too well w/others, adds to the challenge. I sat in my car one night w/a dog b/c it was freezing outside, we were in the middle of a re-roofing (so, yeah, no roof) and E was sick in bed w/a fever of 103. The owner finally got back to me around 11:30 pm.

Recently, I've had a couple of failed attempts too and it's very upsetting. One was near a very busy intersection too. I can only hope for the best.

Will, Merry Christmas, from me and my new 5-year-old kitty we just adopted from the rescue place, O'malley. Keep trying. By the way, your timelapsed ride from newport to la rocked.

Will, I am constantly amazed by the sheer size of your heart. I have to agree with the comment above -- you make this world a better place.

One small tip: I've found that many dogs will respond a command when all else fails. So if kindness and encouragement don't work, you might try a firm command like "come," "heel," or "sit." But try the soft approach first, since it might scare off a dog that's been abused.

And hey, have a very merry Christmas!

Shit. This always gets to me, and it's why I keep a leash and a baggie of dog food in the car, too. Unfortunately, sometimes chasing its dangerous. You can only do what you can do and hope for the best. But I know how hard it is.

The universe is better because people like you are in it.
