Backyarchaeology: Trunk Corner Cap?

The latest strangeness to surface in the repository of odds and ends that is our Silver Lake backyard was this old specifically shaped piece of metal made the more curious by what seems to be the last of four curled up nails accompanying it.

Susan first thought it might have been a corner piece to an old mattress but then saw it more clearly as the corner brace/cap for perhaps an old trunk.

Seeing as I found it in the same area where I unearthed the corner of an old 1923 license plate and large pieces of sheet metal, I’m left wondering if the trunk might have been one on an old car, when a trunk was really and truly a trunk.

Another angle of the thing along with the rest of my Gallery of Backyarchaelogy is here on Flickr.
