For four days during our 2005 trip to Africa, my wife and I were in Rwanda where we ventured to the Virunga Mountains’ Parc National des Volcans to trek mountain gorillas. Upon our return there was interest in a feature about our visit to the extraordinary creatures that I wrote for a planned L.A. Times travel section on Africa but because a staffer had been to a chimpanzee reserve in Tanzania they opted to go with that instead.

Subsequently I submitted the story unsolicited to several periodicals only to receive several rejections. So now I’m self-publishing it here and I hope you enjoy reading it.
